Kinnaur's altitude range explains its snow pattern. Reckong Peo is at about 2,290 m, Sangla at 2,696 m, Kalpa at 2,960 m and Chitkul at 3,450 m. Higher places get snow earlier and keep it longer.
Timing. Early snow can arrive on high peaks in the autumn. Heavier snow usually comes from December onwards, and January and February are the most reliable months for visitors.
Road cautions. Heavy snow has stopped vehicles on rural and link roads in past winters, and power supply in Kalpa and Pooh has been affected. The Sangla to Chitkul road can close in winter.
How to plan
1. Keep flexible dates.
2. Stay in a place with heating and a way to reach it after snow.
3. Check roads daily.
4. Keep an extra night in your plan.
Snow is never guaranteed on a particular day.
