Is Winter Spiti a Trek? The Walking, Stairs and Driving Effort

Key Monastery above the snow, Spiti

It is not a trek. Most of the trip is spent in a vehicle. The difficulty comes from cold, altitude and road conditions.

What the days feel like
- Long drives with slow stretches on snowy or icy roads.
- Short walks at monasteries and villages, some with steps.
- Cold mornings, with temperatures well below freezing at night in high villages. Kibber is above 4,200 m.
- Basic stays and limited services.

Effort level. You do not need trek fitness. You should be able to walk 20 to 30 minutes on uneven ground at altitude and climb steps slowly.

Altitude. Kaza is around 3,800 m. Headaches, poor sleep and breathlessness are common at first. Rest, water and a slow pace help. People with heart, lung or blood pressure conditions should speak to a doctor before booking.

Prepare
1. Walk daily and climb stairs for a few weeks before.
2. Pack layers, not one heavy jacket.
3. Carry personal medicines.

Ask your operator for day-by-day driving hours.
