Winter Spiti with 4 to 6 Friends: Private Vehicle or Shared Seats?

A 4x4 on a gravel road in Spiti

With four to six people, you can afford to choose. Neither is better in every case.

Private vehicle
- You decide stops, start times and rest days.
- You only travel with people you know, which helps if someone is unwell.
- It costs more per person when the group is small, and the cost is split by vehicle, not by seat.

Shared group departure
- Lower cost per seat in many cases.
- Fixed dates and fixed itinerary.
- A group of strangers shares the vehicle and stays.

What to check in either
1. Vehicle type. Winter roads in Kinnaur and Spiti can have snow and ice, so ask about snow-suited vehicles and driver experience.
2. What happens if a road closes. Who pays for extra nights?
3. Seating comfort for the number of people and luggage.
4. Whether stays are heated.

Rule of thumb. If your dates are fixed and your budget is tight, a shared departure may work. If you want to adjust the day when weather changes, a private vehicle is easier.
