Less Crowded Snow Places in Himachal Beyond Manali and Kufri

Snow slopes and pines with the Himalayas behind, Rakhed, Himachal Pradesh

Snow in Himachal depends on the weather. January and February are the most dependable months, and fresh snowfall often starts around late December. Within that, some places feel calmer than the famous two.

Outer hill stations that stay open in winter
- Narkanda: on the Shimla-Kinnaur road, with open slopes and a quieter feel than Kufri.
- Chail: forest ridges, less traffic than Shimla.
- Dalhousie and Khajjiar: Khajjiar is a meadow at about 1,900 m. Dainkund peak nearby is a common snow viewpoint.
- Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj: the Dhauladhar range is the backdrop. Triund treks in snow need experience.

Village bases
- Jibhi, Shoja and Tirthan Valley: wooden homestays in pine forest. Jalori Pass above them is often closed in winter, so do not plan around it.
- Kalpa, Sangla and Chitkul in Kinnaur: high villages that see real snow. Link roads can shut after heavy falls, so plan buffer days.
- Sissu and Solang near Manali: busy at peak but quieter on weekdays.

A note on Barot. District authorities have in the past banned winter trekking in the Barot area because weather can change suddenly. Treat it as a spring-to-autumn stop unless you have current local advice.

How to choose
Pick one base, use day trips, and keep flexible dates. Ask your stay about heating and whether cars reach it after snow.
