November in Kinnaur is cold and clear. Kalpa and Sangla make a good core, and Chitkul is a decision to make on the day after checking the road.
Weather. Long-term averages from IMD show cold nights at Kalpa, close to freezing. Snow can arrive early at high places like Chitkul. These are averages, not a forecast.
A 7-day plan
- Day 1: Chandigarh or Shimla to Narkanda. Hatu Peak (3,400 m, with the Hatu Mata temple) is the local viewpoint if time allows.
- Day 2: Narkanda to Sarahan, home to the Bhimakali temple, a Kath-Kuni style wood-and-stone temple complex.
- Day 3: Sarahan to Sangla Valley.
- Day 4: Sangla, with a Chitkul trip only if the road is clear.
- Day 5: Sangla to Kalpa.
- Day 6: Kalpa and the Kinner Kailash views.
- Day 7: Return towards Shimla or Chandigarh.
The full Shimla to Kalpa route via Sarahan, Sangla and Chitkul is about 316 km, or around 7 hours of driving if driven in one go. You will do it in stages.
Tip. Keep a spare night, and check roads each morning.
