Kalpa and Chitkul by Bike in November: What to Plan For

A motorcycle on a snowy Himachal road

Riding guides place the Kinnaur season at April to June and September to November. By November you are at the end of that window, and Chitkul in particular depends on the day.

The route. Chitkul is the last inhabited village in the Baspa (Sangla) valley, at about 3,450 m. You reach it from Karcham on NH5 (about 1,818 m) by a narrow, cliff-edge road. Kalpa is at about 2,960 m. The older Hindustan-Tibet road along the Sutlej gorge is the riskiest section, especially after rain.

What November means
- Cold mornings and nights close to freezing at Kalpa.
- Fresh snow can reach Chitkul and close or slow the Sangla to Chitkul road.
- Short days. Plan to finish riding by mid-afternoon.

Plan
1. Make Kalpa and Sangla your core stops and treat Chitkul as a go or no-go call on the day, after a live road check.
2. Carry warm riding gear, waterproof gloves and a spare tube or repair kit.
3. Fuel up before the Baspa valley.
4. Ride slowly on shaded corners, where ice stays.
5. Keep a buffer day.

Check the road with local police or your stay before each leg.
