Bir Billing Itinerary: Practical 2, 3 and 4 Day Plans

Paragliding over the green hills of Bir Billing, Himachal Pradesh

Bir sits at about 1,400 m in Kangra district, roughly midway between Dharamshala and Mandi. Billing, the take-off point, is higher, at around 2,400 m. The two are linked by a short road, and most things worth doing are close together. That is why the number of days matters less than how you spread them.

Know the flying window first. Tandem flights usually last 15 to 30 minutes from Billing down to the landing field beside the Tibetan colony. Operators and guides commonly point to morning flights, and to October to November and March to May as the most reliable months. Wind and cloud decide on the day, so a flight can be postponed.

2 days
- Day 1: Arrive, walk through the Tibetan colony, visit Chokling Monastery (large stupa, Padmasambhava statue) and watch the landing field from a cafe at sunset.
- Day 2: Morning drive to Billing for a flight if conditions allow. Spend the afternoon in Bir, then leave.

3 days
Keep the 2-day plan, but add a slow morning around the Sherab Ling area and the Dzongsar monastic college, and a half-day walk through terraced fields and tea plantations near the village.

4 days
Add a full spare day. This is your weather buffer for paragliding, and it can also be a rest or a day trip.

Planning notes
- Book flights for your first or second day, not your last.
- Stay near the Tibetan colony if you want to walk everywhere.
- Fixed rates and operator rules are set locally. Confirm them before paying.
